3D Mammogram:

A 3D mammogram, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), is an advanced imaging technique used for breast cancer screening and detection. It is an extension of traditional 2D mammography that provides a more detailed view of the breast tissue. Here are some benefits of 3D mammography for preventive breast cancer screening:

1. Improved Accuracy: 3D mammography offers improved accuracy in detecting breast cancer compared to traditional 2D mammography. It creates a three-dimensional image of the breast by taking multiple X-ray images from different angles. This allows radiologists to examine the breast tissue layer by layer, reducing the chances of missing abnormalities or overlapping tissues that can sometimes occur with 2D mammograms. Improved accuracy can lead to earlier detection and better treatment outcomes.

2. Enhanced Detection of Small Lesions: The detailed images produced by 3D mammography make it easier to detect small breast lesions, including small tumors or microcalcifications, which are tiny mineral deposits that can be an early sign of breast cancer. The ability to detect these abnormalities at an early stage increases the chances of successful treatment and reduces the need for more invasive interventions.

3. Reduced False Positives: Traditional 2D mammography can sometimes produce false positive results, which means a suspicious finding is detected, but further testing reveals it to be benign. These false positives can lead to unnecessary anxiety, additional testing, and even unnecessary biopsies. With 3D mammography, there is a reduced likelihood of false positives because the detailed images provide clearer visibility and better differentiation between benign and malignant findings.

4. Improved Detection in Dense Breast Tissue: Dense breast tissue consists of more fibrous and glandular tissue than fatty tissue. Dense breast tissue can make it more challenging to detect small tumors or abnormalities using 2D mammography alone, as the dense tissue can mask or obscure potential lesions. 3D mammography has shown to be particularly beneficial in detecting breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue, increasing the accuracy of detection and reducing the likelihood of false negatives.

Early detection is crucial in improving breast cancer outcomes and that is why it is included in our FLC physical for women over 40.
